Friends Of The Earth Petition Against Red Tape Challenge Attack On Environmental Protection

Friends of The Earth have confirmed the concerns expressed by the House of Commons Select Committee on the environment as a result of the Government labelling the existing environmental legislation as ‘red tape’.

Their Red Tape Challenge website lists legislation on:

  • Asbestos in the air
  • Industrial waste in rivers
  • Toxic chemicals

amongst others.

A full list of existing safeguards is on the Government's red tape challenge website.

Oliver Letwin MP is considering replacing all green safeguards with a dangerously simplified 50-page document - according to The Guardian's Damian Carrington

article entitled 'Environmental protection rules may be headed for government shredder.'

FoTE said:

“Laws that protect us from toxic chemicals and keep rivers free from sewage could face the axe if a senior Government minister gets his way.

It is unclear which of the important protections would end up in the bin if Mr Letwin gets his way.”

In urging the pubic to sign an on-line petition to the Minister, FoTE say,

“Please ask him to reveal his plans - or deny them if they are untrue. Don't let him bin our protection from toxic chemicals.”
